300 Hour Teacher Training - Spectra School of Yoga

YOGA

Definition of yoga: 1. comes from the Sanskrit root yuj, which means "to join" or "to yoke" referring to the union of three elements, body, spirit and mind; 2. a practical set of tools and techniques to allow the practitioner to find greater health, well-being and a deep sense of oneness with the world.

 OUR DIFFERENCE

Spectra Yoga’s teacher training program has been developed to give you the best, well rounded training a 300 hour program could offer. We have brought together Orange County’s most highly experienced yoga teachers and educators, many with over a decade of experience in their respective fields. Like our 200 hour program, our focus is on a full spectrum immersion into the various aspects of yoga including, but not limited to, a deep immersion into yoga philosophy, advanced asana, Ayurveda, anatomy and functional movement, the business of yoga and advanced teaching skills. This kind of training is unique in that it is varied, not only in its approach to these topics, but it’s commitment to offer in-depth understanding into the various approaches represented by the background of the trainers. Yoga Sutras - a 5 week exploration of Yoga's Ancient Philosophy

The Yoga Sutras are the foundation of yoga philosophy according to the path of Raja (Royal or Classical) Yoga. Widely regarded as the authoritative text on yoga, they are a collection of aphorisms (general truths), outlining the eight limbs or practices of yoga. These 196 sutras or "threads" (as sutra translates from Sanskrit) of wisdom offer guidelines for living a meaningful and purposeful life.

Join me for a 5 week journey though the Yoga Sutras, and see how these ancient practices can be effectively translated and used for modern day living.

We'll explore: The Yamas, Niyamas, Asana, Pranayama, Pratyahara, Dharana, Dhyana and Samadhi

Are you a yoga teacher and want to learn more about yoga off the mat? Do you want to add more "Yoga" to your asana classes - to create more meaning and transformation for your students? This course is for you! And you can earn 20 hours of CE* (continuing education) with Yoga Alliance if you are a YA registered teacher.

Are you a student of yoga - but yearning for more meaning in your life? Are you ready to take a deeper journey in towards your authentic self? This course is for you too!

Join me Thursday nights, 6:45-9:30pm, March 7- April 4

Required book: Swami Satchidananda, The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali

$299 for non-members

August 25-25th (times and pricing to follow)

A little about Yellowknife, NT, CA:
Yellowknife is the capital, as well as the largest community in the Northwest Territories (NT or NWT), Canada. It is located on the northern shore of Great Slave Lake, approximately 400 km (250 mi) south of the Arctic Circle, on the west side of Yellowknife Bay near the outlet of the Yellowknife River. According to Environment Canada, Yellowknife has the sunniest summer in the country, averaging 1034 hours from June to August. It's one of the best places to see the northern lights because the city and surrounding area is situated directly beneath the aurora oval, which is a halo-like ring that is found around both magnetic poles of the earth.
Although there are other places also just below the aurora oval, the Yellowknife area is deemed the best because of its relatively flat topography, coupled with few geographical obstructions.

10 Hour - Yin Yoga Teacher Training

BACK FOR A SECOND TIME!! We had so much fun the first time, I'm coming back again for more!

During this weekend, we’ll focus on this rapidly growing style of yoga called Yin Yoga.  Working from the “yinside” out, we will explore the main postures of yin yoga, the benefits of this style of practice, and basic anatomy necessary to understand how different bodies create different shapes.  The training is open to both current and aspiring yoga teachers, as well as enthusiastic students who wish to spend the weekend immersed in all things Yin. You’ll leave this weekend with the foundation and ability to guide yourself and your students safely and effectively into a wide variety of yin poses.  This course also qualifies for 10 hours of CE credit with Yoga Alliance for registered yoga teachers.

We’ll be focusing on:

·         The history and philosophy of yin yoga

·         The main poses of yin yoga

·         What is connective tissue and fascia

·         What areas of the body each pose intends to stretch or open

·         Modifications and prop use for each pose

·         Counterposes and Rebound

·         Compression vs Tension

·         Discussion of anatomy specific to this practice (skeletal variation)

·         How to “read and understand” varying body types/limitations in this practice

·         Discussion of physical, energetic and mental benefits of the practice

·         How to build a class (sequencing, timing, music, intention, etc.)

Saturday - October 17 - 1:00-6:00pm

Sunday - October 18 - 1:00 to 6:00pm

Ra University - Overview of the Yamas and Niyamas

*NOTE - this workshop is for 2015 RA Yoga Teacher Training students ONLY

I'll be guiding RA's TT students through the foundational philosophy of yoga through the classic text of Patanjali's Yoga Sutras. Focusing on the first and second limb, the Yamas and Niyamas.

Why study the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali? Because, YSP is not just a manual on yoga philosophy, it is a manual on "life". Studying the 8 limbs will help us understand:

  • How to live a life full of peace, harmony and fulfillment
  • What is stress, what causes stress and how to manage it
  • What causes suffering and how can we prevent it
  • How to keep the mind calm and peaceful in the face of life's challenges
  • What is the goal of life (and of yoga) and how to achieve that goal
  • Does the practice of yoga only involves the practice of asana (physical postures) or is there more to this practice
  • What is self-realization and enlightenment

The 8 limbs consist of:

  1. YAMAS (restraints or self-discipline) – our dealings with others
  2. NIYAMAS (personal observances) – our internal actions and behaviors
  3. ASANA (physical postures) – to develop health, strength and inner perception
  4. PRANAYAMA (breath work – guiding prana/life force through breath)
  5. PRATYAHARA (sense withdrawal, control of desire) – draw attention away from things (sense objects) and to silence/stillness
  6. DHARANA (concentration – focused awareness)
  7. DHYANA (meditation – sustaining awareness)
  8. SAMADHI (union, nirvana, bliss, enlightenment)
